During our first night in the hospital after Eila was born, we soon realized the reason all of her ultrasound photos had been of her hands - our girl loves to have her hands up near her face. Even with the master swaddle techniques the nurses tried, our little lady was determined to break out of the cloth binding and throw her hands in the air. As we enter the third week with Eila, we've all but given up on swaddling her at this point. When she can't move her hands or put them by her face, we've found she becomes ... well .... frustrated to say the least. Another thing we've learned about Eila, is that she loves to kick her feet and move her legs. Constantly moving, our baby girl loves to stretch her legs, flex her toes, and then jam them back up to her belly like how she spent the last 9 months sitting.
Once we decided that swaddling would not be the way for her to sleep comfortably, we tried a number of different sleep sacks to try to find the perfect option. One hurdle we immediately ran into is her size. Although she's grown over the last few weeks from 5lb10oz at birth to 6lb6oz at her 2 week check in, our baby girl is still tiny, tiny! In all of her newborn clothes, we have to roll up the sleeves (almost folding them in half) to fit her. Of the sleep sacks we have, we've found that although she seems comfortable in many of the 0-3 month sacks, often times the shoulder area is still much too large on her. This inevitably means that the fabric rides up into her face making them less than an idea (or even really safe) sleep option.
Goumi Sleeper
Several weeks ago, my mom saw an episode of Shark Tank that featured #goumikids. The new equivalent of QVC for her, she went online and purchased the Dreams Full of Wonder bundle for us. When she told me that she sent us these sleepers, I didn't think much of it. Many times when she tells me she saw something on Shark Tank, I just nod and then quickly forget what company or item she was referring to (again, I think it of it as the modern QVC so....)

Fast forward to yesterday - as my husband changed Eila, I opened her dresser drawer that I had put all of her sleep sacks in and there like a shining beacon of gold was the Goumi sleeper. I pulled it out, showed to Patrick, and we quickly agreed to try it on her. What was the worst that could happen, right? She could scream bloody murder for a bit if she didn't like it or we could have to change her if she go too hot, but other than that what did we really have to loose? Let's face it, life with a newborn means that we've signed up for sleepless nights anyways. We figured why not try every sleep sack and swaddle option possible if it means we may get to sleep more than 2 hours at a time. Last night, after we Eila ate her fill of boob juice (where does she put it all?), changed her into a new, clean diaper (nevermind, this is where the boob juice goes), and changed her into her new Goumi sleep sack she was ready for bed. Cautiously, we put our little love in her bassinet and started the nights festivities of feasting, pooping, and snoozing all over again. That is - until this morning! Our kiddo slept for FIVE HOURS STRAIGHT! Can I say without a shadow of a doubt that this sleep sack is the reason she slept for more than 2 hours at a time? No. Do I think it helped her to sleep comfortably? Heck yes.
Things we LOVE about these sleepers...
First off, the fabric is so, so soft. It is an incredibly luxurious feeling fabric that is breathable, and comfortable on my babies sensitive skin.

Secondly, this is a momma made company. Ever look at an item that a mommy made and just think to yourself that's it. That's what we've needed this whole time. This company fits that bill. This is a mommy led company with mommy made products. This means that the sleepers don't have unnecessary bells and whistles. These sleepers easily convert to sleep sacks with the use of ONE button. This means, that the line of buttons at the top don't need to be touched all night long. Late night diaper changes are so much easier when you're not struggling to line up buttons or struggling to pull up zippers so the fact that this sleeper converts to a sack with a single button made diaper changing even easier. It also meant that since our changes were at the speed any NASCAR pit crew would have been proud of that Eila wasn't getting cold or waking up fully in the middle of the night. This made putting her back down to sleep after a change and bottle that much easier.
The third thing we love about these sleepers is that they are long sleeved. The long sleeved sleeper lets Eila move her arms and legs easily, while also keeping her cozy all night. Over the past few weeks, we've taken to putting her in a long sleeve onesie, with a diaper, and then a sleep sack on top. This meant that at night we would have to unzip the sleep sack, unbutton the onesie, push all that fabric out of the way, and pray that she didn't start peeing like the Trevi fountain as soon as the cold, night air hit her behind. Last night, though, she slept in only the diaper and Goumi sleeper.
Lastly, you can't beat the price, friend. Most sleep sacks, I've found at least, run between $18-30. Coming in at $32 per sleeper this multi-functional piece of clothing is well worth the extra few dollars to help ensure that your little one sleeps well throughout the night.
